Gurnee is a charming village that resides in Lake County, Illinois. It borders Waukegan and is considered a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Over twenty-six million visitors come annually to visit the Six Flags Great America Park as well as the Gurnee Mills mall. Tourists and wanderers have plenty to look forward to, in short. Early settlers to the area emigrated from the town of Warren, New York via foot and horseback. In 1835-1836, a land company, also from New York, founded a Community House, which was the site of the old Gurnee Grade School, to accommodate families during the settlement process and while waiting for land grants from the government. A ford used by the Potowatomi Indians was nearby, that they used to cross the river, which would lead to a floating log bridge being constructed in 1842. As time progressed, the area that had been named under the Warren Township began its transition to its current name after the 14th mayor of Chicago, Walter S. Gurnee, agreed to develop a station in Wentworth that was named, appropriately, “Gurnee Station”. The name went on to be incorporated.
Gurnee experiences fairly consistent weather throughout the months, most often in the lower ranges, especially when it comes to the winter months. Residents and visitors can expect fog, occasional thunderstorms and generally cloudy weather due to the effects of chilling, Northern winds and the surrounding Great Lakes and other bodies of water.
As stated before, over twenty-six million visitors come for the aforementioned Six Flags Great America Park as well as for the Gurnee Mills mall. Of course, for those who aren’t into major tourist areas, Gurnee has plenty to offer in the way of fun things to do, both for the individual and for the whole family
