Libertyville is an affluent suburb in Lake County, Illinois, and is considered a northern suburb of Chicago. It is conveniently located five miles west of Lake Michigan and resides on the Des Plaines River. Originally owned by the Illinois River Potawatomi Indians until 1829, the town was sold to the U.S government due to the pressures of lessening resources and economy. Bought for $12,000, the Potawatomi Indians left their land in the mid-1830s, and, by 1835, the first recorded non-indigenous resident had arrived in the form of a gentleman named George Vardin. The settlement that he developed around the area was initially named Vardin’s Grove. Libertyville would go through several more name changes, the expansion of the Milwaukee railroad line, fires downtown and the signing of the declaration of independence before the name finally settled into what it is today. Libertyville itself has been rated highly as both a place to live as well as to visit.
